Permanent Eyeliner: Pros, Cons and What to Expect

Published August 26, 2026 6 min read By Maryna B. Turner · MB Beauty, Las Vegas
The Short Answer

Permanent eyeliner comes in two forms at MB Beauty: winged eyeliner at $449, and lash line enhancement at $389, which places pigment between the lashes with no visible line. Both hold roughly 1.5–3 years, both need a perfecting touch-up billed separately, and visible healing runs 5–14 days. The trade is real: no daily drawing, but the shape is a decision you live with for years.

Ask ten people what permanent eyeliner looks like and you will get two completely different pictures. That is not confusion — they are two services, and choosing the wrong one is the most common regret in this category.

Two services, two very different results

  • Winged eyeliner, $449. Defines the lash line and extends into a wing mapped to your eye shape. Visible as eyeliner, whether crisp and classic or softly shaded. This is the one people picture.
  • Lash line enhancement, $389. Fine pigment placed between the lashes so they read fuller and denser. No wing, no visible line — the effect is that your lashes look thicker, not that you are wearing liner.

If what you want is to look awake without looking made up, the second is almost always the answer, and people who ask for the first sometimes leave the consultation choosing it.

What it costs, including the part quotes leave out

The service price is one number. The perfecting touch-up after healing is a separate charge, and it is a normal part of the process rather than a sign something went wrong — colour settles unevenly, and the second visit evens it. The $50 deposit taken at booking comes off your total rather than adding to it. Budget for two appointments and there are no surprises; budget for one and there will be.

The honest downsides

  1. Shape is a long commitment. Colour fades over years, but the placement decision is made once. A wing that suits you now is a wing you look at for a couple of years — which is exactly why mapping happens before any pigment.
  2. It looks stronger before it looks right. Immediately after the appointment the line reads darker and heavier than the healed result. Judging it in the first week is judging the wrong thing.
  3. Maintenance does not end. Retention here is individual, and a refresh eventually comes due. Anyone promising a permanent line is describing something that does not exist.
  4. It is not a fix for lash loss. Lash line enhancement makes existing lashes read denser. It does not add lashes.

How long colour generally holds across permanent makeup, and what actually drives the difference, is covered in how long permanent makeup lasts.

What the first two weeks look like

Visible healing runs about 5 to 14 days depending on the area, and eyes are on the shorter end of that. Expect the line to look bolder at first, then to soften as the skin settles. Colour keeps adjusting after the visible part is over, which is why the touch-up is planned once healing has finished rather than during it. Do not book within a fortnight of anything you will be photographed at.

When it is not the right call

There are firm limits here, and they are not negotiable ones. The procedure is ruled out entirely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and clients must be at least 18. Where a specific medical reason exists, clearance from your doctor may be asked for — that is judged individually rather than required of everyone. Beyond that it is a fit question, and the free consultation is where it gets answered honestly, including when the answer is that neither service suits you.

Which one actually suits your eyes?

Shape is mapped against your own eye before any pigment, and the consultation is free — including the version where the honest answer is neither.

It is worth it if drawing liner is part of most mornings and you are comfortable with a shape decided once and lived with for a couple of years. It is not worth it if you change your eyeliner style often, or if you were hoping for something that never needs renewing.

The placement is a long commitment even though the colour fades; it looks stronger and heavier before it settles; a refresh eventually comes due, so maintenance does not end; and lash line enhancement makes existing lashes read denser rather than adding any.

Around 1.5 to 3 years before the colour wants refreshing, though retention differs from person to person. Skin type, how fast your skin renews, sun exposure and aftercare all move the result within that range.

Winged eyeliner is $449 and defines the lash line before extending into a wing mapped to your eye shape, so it reads as eyeliner. Lash line enhancement is $389 and places fine pigment between the lashes with no visible line, so lashes simply look fuller.

It is ruled out entirely during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and clients must be 18 or older. Where there is a specific medical reason, clearance from your doctor may be requested — assessed individually rather than asked of every client.
